About one in four Batswana has HIV/AIDS in Botswana. Prior to coming here, images of starving children, poor women roaming the streets, and other stereotypes of African came to my mind. Being here now for about 8 months my perception has changed drastically.
When I walk into my village there isn’t a lot of conversation about sex, HIV/AIDS, and other issues that may be apparent from a foreigners persepective. In fact a lot of the topics I mentioned above are taboo to talk about. Similiar to the United States, parents find it difficult to talk about sex, but in Botswana the idea of parents not talking about sex and relationships is seen as something that is a part of the culture.
